Baby, It's Cold Outside: An Enemies to Lovers Holiday Medical Romance Page 7
“Sofia,” Emmett said, shock making his heart race. Not because he’d said her name out loud, or because it was the answer to Natalie’s question, even though both were true. No, the reason for his surprise was currently standing in the doorway of the softly lit room, wearing a cranberry-colored dress that hugged her curves in a way that would’ve made him jealous of the thing if he wasn’t so busy loving how fucking gorgeous it made her look.
Make that gorgeous and determined.
Sofia’s dark brown eyes locked in on his, her gaze never wavering as she moved with purpose across the room, not stopping until she was right in front of him.
“Sofia,” he breathed. “I thought you weren’t—”
She cut him off with a firm press of her mouth. Even though his shock redlined, Emmett didn’t make a move to stop her—he wasn’t an idiot, after all—and finally, she pulled back to look at him.
“I am,” she said. “I know you probably thought I wasn’t coming, and I’m sorry. It just took me a little longer than I thought to figure out how I feel.”
Emmett smiled, but he had to be sure. “And how’s that?”
“Like I belong right here at this party because I’m in your arms,” Sofia said. “I’ve let the holidays make me feel sad for the last five years because I miss my father. But I lost sight of the happiness he would have wanted for me. And I want to be happy. At work, outside of work. I want to be with you, Emmett. If you still want me, too, that is.” Her chin dropped a fraction. “I know I can be—”
This time, Emmett cut her off with a kiss, and oh, turnabout had never been so sweet. “Does that answer your question about what I want?”
Sofia nodded, a smile blooming over her beautiful face. “It does.”
“Good, because there’s a lot more where that came from.”
The sound of a voice clearing interrupted whatever response Sofia might make, and Emmett realized with a start that half the room and all of their colleagues had been looking on.
“So does this mean that you two are finally a thing?” Natalie asked, and Emmett put on his very best cocky grin.
“We’re the best thing,” he corrected, placing his forehead over Sofia’s. “Merry Christmas, Sofia.”
Her eyes twinkled with pure happiness as she wrapped her arms around him. “Hopefully, the first of many.”
